Former Mayor, Four-Term PA House Member, Child Advocate and Human Services Expert Brings 35 Years of Public Service Experience to RPG Clients

HARRISBURG (January 27, 2015) – The Ridge Policy Group welcomes former PA Secretary of Human Services Beverly Mackereth as Senior Government Relations Specialist. The former mayor and Pennsylvania State Representative brings more than 35 years of experience in public service to Ridge Policy Group clients, including a legacy of defending the rights of children. Led by our nation’s first Secretary of Homeland Security and former Governor of Pennsylvania, Tom Ridge, the Ridge Policy Group is a bi-partisan, full-service government relations and issue management firm. Ridge long-time senior advisors Mark Holman and Mark Campbell lead day-to-day operations from offices in Washington, D.C. and Harrisburg.

“Bev Mackereth shares with all of us at Ridge Policy Group a passion for the value of public service and the good that government can do,” said Gov. Ridge. “As a mayor, a state representative and as an effective leader of the largest state agency in the country, Bev understands how to get things done in order to produce a positive outcome that benefits people in meaningful ways. I could not be more pleased to welcome Bev back into the Ridge ‘family.’ Our clients will be the beneficiary of her wisdom and bipartisan approach to problem-solving.”

Public service has been the hallmark of Mackereth’s professional career. She began her service with the York County Blind Center in 1979 and served as a caseworker and supervisor at York County Children and Youth Services for much of the 1980s.

Her experience in helping York County children led to her service with the York County District Attorney’s Office beginning with her position of victim witness coordinator. Mackereth created a number of important programs within the District Attorney’s Office including the Child Abuse Unit, the “Stop Violence Against Women” program, and a Juvenile Prosecution Unit. Mackereth has also served as a statewide consultant for Pennsylvania’s Office of Attorney General.

In 1997, Mackereth was appointed by Governor Tom Ridge as deputy director of the Governor’s Community Partnership for Safe Children. The partnership was established to assist communities in setting up effective programs to reduce childhood violence.

“The opportunity to reunite with Gov. Ridge and his team was one I simply could not pass up,” said Mackereth. “Mark Holman, Mark Campbell and everyone at Ridge Policy Group are recognized both in Harrisburg and in Washington as dedicated professionals who work tirelessly on behalf of their clients. I am eager to use the skills I have acquired over a long career in public service to further those efforts.”

Mackereth was previously elected as Mayor of Spring Grove in 1996 until 2000, and served on the Spring Grove Borough Council and Planning Commission.

Mackereth was elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 2000 to serve the 196th Legislative District, and served four terms in office. During her tenure in the legislature, Mackereth served on the Education, Children & Youth, Aging & Older Adult Services, Judiciary, and Health & Human Services Committees. She was also appointed deputy whip and chairperson of the House Basic Education Subcommittee.

In 2008, Mackereth took the position of Executive Director of the York County Human Services Department.  In November 2011 Mackereth was appointed by Governor Corbett as the Deputy Secretary of the Office of Children, Youth and Families in the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services.  In June 2013 Mackereth was named Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services.

Bev Mackereth graduated Frostburg State University in 1979 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Sociology. She is the mother of four and lives in Spring Grove with her husband, Michael.
